Chinese Dragons
In celebration of Chinese New Year, students watched a YouTube read aloud from the book “Nian, the Chinese New Year Dragon” by Virginia Loh-Hagan, Illustrated by Timothy Banks. The book depicted the origins of Chinese New Year mythology through the story of Mei, a brave little girl, who outwitted a dangerous dragon. Students engaged in conversations about style choices the illustrator made, and what type of setting they could place their Chinese Dragon in. Some students imagined their dragons in a natural setting, like a mountain range or volcano. Others imagined their dragons as part of a celebration in a city, with other parade floats.

Koi Printing
Students learned about the process of printing, and designed a koi pond of their own imagination. Using watercolor for the background, students used foam plates to print their koi fish onto their backgrounds.
